Join Us in Supporting a Vibrant Downtown
19 March 2026
The buzz of new restaurants, the charm of a new antique-style clock, a vibrant mural tucked just off Main Street, and the festive lights glowing on the Town Common are more than welcome additions to Walpole. They are visible signs of a downtown coming to life.
A key component of this momentum is Destination Downtown, a volunteer-driven nonprofit launched in 2019 with a clear mission: to keep downtown Walpole strong, vibrant, and thriving. What began as a community-led effort to bring cultural events, aesthetic improvements and business resources to the downtown, has grown into a dynamic organization championing improvements, promoting local enterprises, and serving as a trusted source of downtown news and information.
But progress doesn’t happen on its own. A thriving downtown requires engaged neighbors (people like you!), supportive businesses, and strong partnerships with town leaders.
Destination Downtown is seeking volunteers to help plan community events, manage marketing and social media, assist with newsletters, support local businesses, organize fundraising efforts, and continue advocating for improvements.
The goal is simple yet ambitious: fill vacant storefronts, attract diverse businesses, increase foot traffic, and ensure downtown Walpole not only survives economic challenges but truly thrives.
There are many ways to make a difference. Residents can contribute their time, skills, or financial support to sustain and expand the organization’s work. Even a small commitment of a few hours per month can have a meaningful impact. For those curious about getting involved, attending a monthly meeting with no commitment is a great way to learn more and explore where your interests might fit in. Every contribution helps build a welcoming and vibrant town center.
Over the past several years, the impact has become tangible, felt across the community. Destination Downtown has commissioned community treasures like the “Welcome to Walpole” mural and a cartoon-style downtown map, adding beauty and identity to our shared spaces. The organization successfully advocated for outdoor dining and downtown improvement funding, partnered with the Town to create a COVID-19 Rapid Recovery Plan, and worked to preserve the iconic Old Town Hall building. Through collaboration with Walpole Media, local businesses have gained valuable exposure, while events like the Annual Business Forum, hosted alongside the Walpole Chamber and Economic Development Department, have strengthened connections among business leaders and town officials.

Even behind-the-scenes advocacy can make a real difference. Recently, Executive Director Sarah Khatib collaborated with Watson Candies to connect the business directly with legislators, helping to fast-track long delayed essential repairs following Main Street roadwork by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. These efforts were critical to the restoration of outdoor lighting and completion of other improvements, small details that make a big impact. It’s exactly the kind of quiet win that supports our businesses and keeps a downtown feeling welcoming and alive.
As downtown continues to evolve, Destination Downtown has also stepped forward as a key community information hub. In 2023, the organization launched an expanded website offering breaking news and updates. A recent in-depth, two-part series explored housing growth in downtown Walpole, including projects such as Sanctuary on East apartments and Toll Brothers townhouses, the first development proposed under MBTA zoning in Walpole. By providing accessible, on-the-ground reporting and maintaining a robust community calendar, Destination Downtown ensures residents can engage thoughtfully in conversations shaping the town’s future.
Downtown Walpole’s revival is visible in its lights, murals, storefronts, and gathering spaces. With continued community involvement, its future is even brighter. Join us, together, we can continue building a downtown that reflects the very best of Walpole!
